Appointment of Members to the Mexico-United States Interparliamentary Group

For more than half a century, legislators from the United States and Mexico have held regular gatherings to enhance and reinforce their binational relationship through the U.S.-Mexico Interparliamentary Meetings, otherwise known as the US-Mexico Interparliamentary Group. These meetings have established a robust foundation for a collaborative binational agenda between the two countries, focusing on persistent themes such as migration and security, as well as emerging issues like trade agreements and technological advancement. However, since 2011, these meetings have faced instability.

On June 16, 2023, the Speaker of the House announced the appointment of new members to the Mexico-United States Interparliamentary Group, signaling a commitment to strengthen bilateral relations and address shared challenges.

The following Members were selected on behalf of the U.S. House to the Mexico-United States Interparliamentary Group:

1. Mr. Michael McCaul, Texas, Chair

2. Mr. David Valadao, California

3. Mr. Carlos Gimenez, Florida

4. Mr. Juan Ciscomani, Arizona

5. Ms. Monica De La Cruz, Texas

The appointment of these members indicates a possible resurgence of the Interparliamentary Meetings. It is necessary to reestablish these meetings as a yearly institutional mechanism, allowing the congresses of both countries to meet and discuss important matters. By participating in regular exchanges, legislators from Mexico and the United States can strengthen ties, promote understanding, and work together to find effective solutions to common challenges.
