U.S. Secretary of Energy visit to Mexico

January 24, 2022

Institutional Context

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) was created in 1977. Its lineage traces to the Manhattan Project effort to develop the atomic bomb during World War II and to the various energy-related programs that previously had been dispersed throughout various federal agencies. Its Mexican counterpart, the Mexican Ministry of Energy (SENER in Spanish) is responsible for conducting the national energy policies in order to grant the safe supply of energy services under the required quality, economic, environmental, and legal standards.

Energy cooperation among the United States and Mexico is long-standing, extensive, robust, and covers numerous areas of mutual interest. The Office of International Affairs leads initiatives between the U.S. DOE and SENER on two energy initiatives under the U.S.-Mexico High-Level Economic Dialogue. The first one on energy data and information sharing, and the second one on energy infrastructure. The U.S. DOE and SENER also serve with the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Mexican Secretariat of Economy as government co-chairs of a U.S.-Mexico Energy Business Council, which includes ten energy industry representatives from each country.*
